The Government of Southern Sudan is preparing law enforcement forces to manage and implement wildlife laws in a bid to combat poaching and save zebras and elephants from extinction.

SPLA soldiers, game rangers and police from the ten states of Southern Sudan are attending a three-day workshop in Juba to increase their capacity to enforce wildlife laws.

Director of Wildlife Conservation Society, Paul Elkan, told the participants that the various Government sectors including SPLA, Judiciary, police, and game rangers, should form a partnership development to enforce laws protecting wildlife in South Sudan.

Mr. Elakn said that giraffes, elephants and lions were among the valuable species that survived the two-decade civil of war and needed to be protected against poaching.

Mr. Elakn said road development in South Sudan was endangering wildlife.

He added that zebras and elephants were at risk due to illegal hunting.

Wildlife laws are expected to be presented to the parliament for discussion and approval within the next two weeks.
