Residents of the disputed Abyei region will not accept a delay on the referendum whether to belong to south Sudan and may organize it by themselves.

Abyei administrator Deng Arop Kuol said residents may hold their own vote with or without the government on January 9, Reuters reported.

Mr. Arop, who is a SPLM member, said the people of Abyei were still hoping for the referendum to be held on January 9.

Talks between the SPLM and the NCP on Abyei borders and who was illegible to vote in the referendum stalled.

The talks, brokered by the US special representative Scott Gration, will resume later this month.
