People in Juba reacted strongly to a statement made by Libyan president Muammar Gaddafi saying that the independence of south Sudan would encourage similar demands for secession bringing chaos to the continent.
Ayuen Garang told SCR News that southerners were not afraid of Mr. Gaddafi’s influence.He added that south Sudan had the world support since it was claiming for its rights.
Ukech Kidi accused Gaddafi of blowing the unity trumpet for north Sudan.
He added that southerners have already have made a decision for independence.
Omara John Bosco said Mr. Gaddafi was known for issuing contradictory statements.
He added that separation comes as a result of discontent since nobody would ask for separation unless he or she is satisfied.
Barnaba Marial Benjamin, GoSS minister of Information and government refuted Mr. Gaddafi’s statement saying South south was a special case and the referendum on self-determination was a legal provision in the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement.
Mr. Marial called on international community, particularly the Arab League and African Union, to respect their legal obligations towards the CPA.
The minister added he was surprised by contradictory remarks from some African leaders who had previously pledged to recognize outcome of the referendum.
