The eighth South Sudan Governors’ Forum is scheduled for the end of this month after the Commissioners’ Forum took place in the ten states of the South.

Thusitha Pilapitiya, Head of UNDP Southern Sudan’s Democratic Governance Unit, said the Governors’ Forum is of paramount importance because it provides a space for broader discussion on important issues such as public service reform, corruption and CPA implementation.

The Commissioners’ Forums celebrated in the ten states of South Sudan drew together county commissioners, local government officers, traditional chiefs, state government representatives and other stakeholders.

The UNDP, that sponsored the events, said discussions centered on the preparations for the upcoming referendum as well as community security.

The participants also discussed about county administration, fiscal matters and coordination between the government and international partners.

The local government officials concluded also that lack of proper roads, communication systems and buildings at county and payam level were obstructing effective governance.

This was the first time such a series of events took place in South Sudan.
