Nine days of US-mediated talks between the SPLM and the NCP over the Abyei referendum and other issues have failed in Addis Ababa.

SPLM Secretary-Genral Pagan Amum told the press yesterday upon his arrival from the Ethiopian capital that the peace process in Abyei was being held hostage by the NCP.

Mr. Amum added that the talks on the Abyei referendum process and border demarcation failed.

Mr. Amum accused the NCP of coming with new positions contrary to the Permanent Court of Arbitration ruling and the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

He called upon the international community and the UN to prevent any sort of ethnic cleaning or genocide against the Ngok Dinka in Abyei.

Mr. Amum confirmed that a new round of talks was scheduled for Addis Ababa at the end of October.

The talks were mediated by a US team headed by the Special Envoy to Sudan, Scott Gration.
