A demining company started an awareness campaign on risks posed by mines and other unexploded war materials in Yei County today targeting especially the young.

Mawa Alex is the community liaison officer for Mine Advisory Group (MAG). He told Radio Easter that the aim of the mine risk education campaign was to make the communities aware of mines and other unexploded bombs known as UXOS in their areas through photographs and talks.

Mr. Mawa added that the education campaign on mines targeted children majorly because they were the group most at risk since they moved about unaware of threats.

He said there were areas of Yei County with mines and other unexploded war materials like Marakonye and Koromosuku.

Mr. Mawa said unexploded mines were a life hazard and urged residents to report any strange objects to the local authorities or to demining organizations.

MAG started the awareness campaign at Jigomoni Primary today. Next week it will repeat the awareness exercise in other schools of Yei town.
