The UN Security Council visit to Wau was cancelled due to technical problems to the aircraft that should have brought the envoys to the capital of Western Bahr el-Ghazal.
After visiting Juba, the UN delegation was expected to reach Wau yesterday and then to proceed to El Fasher and Khartoum. The envoys, led by Susan Rice, the US ambassador at the UN, had plans to meet civil society members and to visit different health institutions in town.
Hundreds of people, including children, women groups and students, were marching in the streets since early morning ready to welcome the delegation and were highly disappointed by the cancellation of the visit.
People considered the visit as a great opportunity to express their views on different issues like the referendum, human rights, security, and to let the international community know about their concerns and the real situation on the ground.
It was a big disappointed when they were informed by an official of the US Consulate, that the visit was cancelled due to technical problems with the airplane.
Although the meeting was canceled, various groups had the possibility to submit their messages in writing to the UN officials.
Western Bahr el Ghazal residents hope their messages will reach the UN Security Council and that their voices will be heard.
