The US development agency opened the rehabilitated county headquarters in Akobo on Saturday. The works started last year in response to escalating violence in Jonglei state.

Barry Wekly, USAID Ambassador in South Sudan, told participants during the launch that Akobo County is a key area for the US government because its stability is important for the implementation of the CPA.

He added that the rehabilitation of the county headquarters is a great example of community engagement adding that there has been a decrease of violence in 2010 through Akobo.

Merv Coop from AECOM, USAID’s implementing partner, said his team would do the same for Pibor, Nasser and Ulang counties in Lakes and Upper Nile states.

Akobo County Commissioner, Goi Jooyul Yol, said the building was the first of its kind in Akobo since pre-colonial times.

He added that USAID’s work with the community of Akobo was a major factor in creating a more stable environment.
