Southern Sudanese musicians banned foreign artists from performing in the region until completion of the referendum.

Speaking to Journalists this morning in Juba, Peter Garang, and acting Secretary of the Union of southern Sudan artists said his Association issued an order banning the foreign musicians from performing across the region.

Mr. Garang explained that the purpose is to allow the local artists to pass messages of the referendum to the citizens of southern Sudan.

Mr. Garang revealed that foreign artists who perform voluntarily and inform southerners on the referendum would be welcome in the region.

He called upon foreign musicians to join local artists in the referendum campaign.

President of the South Sudan artists association Lam Tungwar opposed the ban against foreign musicians and called upon the GoSS ministry of youth and culture to empower local artists so that they can produce more meaningful referendum songs.

It is reported that most foreign musicians perform in the evening hours after office time. It is not clear if the union of artists will disseminate referendum songs at night too.
