The representative of the UN Secretary General in the Sudan said his chief’s statement on the referendum of Southern Sudan was misinterpreted by the media.

Ashraf Qazi was this morning in Juba to pay a farewell call on President Salva Kiir Mayardit at the end of his assignment in the Sudan.

During his press conference, SCR News asked if Mr. Ban’s position on the Sudan represented a change in UNMIS mandate.

Ban Ki-moon was quoted as saying he will work to maintain the unity of Sudan even after the referendum on self-determination.

Mr. Qazi said Mr. Ban’s statement was in accordance with the CPA.

He added the decision about unity will be taken by the Southern Sudanese.

Mr. Qazi thanked Mr. Kiir and his government for all the support and cooperation for his mission.

He reiterated the UNMIS full support for the successful implementation of the CPA.
