IOM harnesses solar energy to power parts of Malakal early next year

International Organization for Migration or IOM is harnessing solar energy to power Malakal early next year.
The partners are anticipating some 1,900 solar panels capable of creating up to 700 kilowatts of power that will be installed around the Hub by December 2019.
This project is under the private sector collaboration linking Scandinavia to Sub-Saharan Africa.
The Norwegian company has selected South Sudan among the first of its locations to pilot the projects in humanitarian settings.
Senior Vice President of Scatec Frederic Grosse says the project can make a difference in South Sudan because generators affect the environment, tend to be inefficient and very costly to run.
This Scatec Solar collaboration will be the second solar project IOM operates in Malakal.
The Organization also uses solar power to pump and distribute 500,000 litres of water daily to meet the needs of Protection of civilians sites and Humanitarian Hub residents.
