Culture major hindrance to report gender violence cases to men in Torit

Culture is a major hindrance to men in reporting gender-based violence cases in their various locations, said callers of Radio Emmanuel during the morning breeze program.

They believe that according to the culture, men are naturally powerful and women are naturally weak, therefore there is no need for men to report a woman, but to discipline her by beating when there is misunderstanding in the family.

A caller who, identified herself only as mama Grace, calls on men to approach the law in case of misunderstanding in the family.

She advises parents to tell their male children in the family to understand that boys and girls are equal before their parents.

“This cannot help when we look at the culture and talking to children the young boys that you are a man don’t feel shy stand bold, that is why men look at this as a shame to man to report anything happening to them by the opposite sex if he report that my wife has done this to me the age group will tell him you are a man don’t report your wife just take it easy, just put her down and advise her that is why men do not want to report GBV cases being perpetuated by women”, Grace explains.

Another caller who identified himself as Uncle Albino admits, culture has a great impact to men in terms of reporting gender violence cases to the concerned authorities.

According to him, mutual understanding between men and women in the house is paramount in reducing some harmful cultural practices in the society.

“The problem why men don’t report when being abuse by a woman is that it look like your own dog that you have brought and again bite you as the owner that is your wife sometimes she can even chop you, you cannot report your wife and number two is that men fear being ashamed by fellow men, the age mate they will just tell you why have you taken her to report just beat her and she will understand you or even they will ask you how did you allow a woman to beat, you just discipline her, these are some things that stop men from reporting their cases to police when something happened between him and the opposite sex”, he points out.

The speakers made their remarks to radio Emmanuel during the breeze program on Thursday.
