INSECURITY, FAMINE, FEAR AFFECT LEER COUNTY

Insecurity together with famine and fear are making lives very difficult at Leer County in Unity State.

A Church source told CRN via e-mail that cattle raids are common and highway car ambushes have increased in Panyijair, Mayiendit and Koch roads, leaving two lorry drivers dead.

The source said the police made some arrests but travelling in the area was still a big risk.

Community leaders reported that a woman called Nyapader Chol from Mayiendit is spreading fear and contributing to insecurity by encouraging young men to raid Dinka cattle camps and girls to behave in strange ways.

Some youths were seen with weapons and in uniforms ready for raiding.

Heavy rainfall last year destroyed practically all the crops and most people are now starving.

Reports by pastoral agents say food aid reached out a few families in some areas only and most households live with the daily and hard reality of having no food until the first crops are ready in July or August.
