A linguist from Haifa University in Israel said Bari language writing system needed improvement to make it easier for speakers to read and write faster.
John Myhill told CRN that when Bari speakers read texts they do it very slowly because either people are not trained to read the language or the writing system is complicated. He explained that one clear problem with Bari language is that there are many words like lo or na which have different meanings and functions and they confuse readers and slow down reading.
Professor Myhill proposed that Bari speakers revised the writing system for readers to understand the meaning quickly.
He said it was good to do it now while the writing system was not yet fixed in people’s minds.
Professor Myhill was talking to CRN in Juba during a five-day workshop on the Bari language as means of learning where he is the main presenter.
The workshop is organized by Central Equatoria Education Ministry.
