A judge at Eastern Equatoria High Court on Wednesday fined 23 women for unlawful involvement in shisha business.

The High Court Judge sentenced each of the women to a fine of 200 pounds or six months in prison, Radio Emmanuel.

The State High Court ruling came a day after CID operatives stormed tea joints in and around Torit with a search warrant issued by the office of Torit County Public Prosecution Attorney.

Police arrested a number of women and impounded or destroyed some shisha smoking equipment.

Former Torit County Commissioner William Oyet on October Ê2012 issued a local order forbidding shisha smoking in Torit.

Torit County Public Prosecution Attorney John Wani Lado said legal steps were taken to execute the local order.

The fines collected are to be remitted to Torit County account.

Justice Wani said any person arrested for being in shisha business would meet severe sentences.

He warned that the hunt for illegal shisha joints would continue.
