The United Nations special envoy said on Friday that South Sudan and Sudan have begun withdrawing their troops from a safe demilitarized border zone.

Haile Menkerios was briefing the Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in New York on the latest agreements between South Sudan and Sudan.

He told Mr. Ban that both Governments instructed oil companies to begin producing, transporting and exporting oil from South Sudan through Sudan.

Mr Menkerios expressed hope that progress in implementation of the 27 September agreements will enhance confidence between South Sudan and Sudan and pave the way for the two governments to address the few outstanding issues that remain unsolved.
