Some residents of Tombura in Western Equatoria are unhappy with the County Commissioner and contested the expansion of the local airstrip.

Tombura County Commissioner Babiro Charles Gbamisi held a meeting on Wednesday to address the issue of Tombura airstrip expansion and food contribution to support the people of Eastern Equatoria, Anisa Radio reported.

He said some people were spreading rumours that the airstrip would be 300 metres wide.

Mr Gabiro explained that UNMISS engineers proposed a 100-meters enlargement on both sides of the runway, but the County reduced it to 50.

He asked the people living within 50 meter-area along both sides of the airstrip to evacuate because the county would compensate them.

Paramount Chief Mboribamu Baabe complained that the commissioner was not transparent.

He accused Commissioner Gabiro of being non-cooperative with the local chiefs because the issue was not discussed with them.

Captain Mathew Mabenge complained that public funds were diverted by the county authorities for their personal interests.

He threatened to support a massive campaign to overthrow the county government.

Tombura press secretary David Bakundiri accused some individuals of undermining the agenda of the meeting and backing up a campaign to change Tombura Commissioner.

The meeting drew 173 participants from different bomas in Tombura County.
