UNMISS, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, dispatched a team to investigate the cattle raid that killed more than 100 people in Akobo County of Jonglei State.

Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General Martin Nesirky told journalists in New York that the fact-finding team includes UN personnel and officials from the Government of South Sudan.

He said the team will obtain accurate information on the clash, assess the needs of the affected population and determine what is required by the authorities to address the situation.

On Friday, a convoy of people from Walgok were attacked while migrating north to the wetlands with cattle.

They were protected by some 40 soldiers.

Governor Kuol Manyang Juuk said over 100 people, including women and children, were killed in the raid.

He added that some cattle were recovered by the army and returned to the owners.

Governor Manyang blamed David Yau Yau’s rebel forces for the attack together with some youths armed by them.

He told CRN he wanted Yau Yau’s rebellion dealt with before May.
