The catholic parish in Abyei is organizing trauma healing sessions for returnees arriving in the area.

Deputy Parish Priest Biong Kual told Voice of Hope over the phone from Aneit that the parish helped returnees coming from Wau with basic materials and food.

He explained that the Church will carry out counselling programs in order to erase the effects and traumas of war for the returnees to be fully integrated in the communities.

The priest also revealed that the Church is preparing to mobilize locals for the Abyei Referendum in October this year.

Fr Kual said the situation of the returnees is still difficult.

He explained that the Church has little to offer – mosquito nets, blankets and food -, and NGOs do not operate in the area.

Fr Kual said the transport of returnees to Abyei is political.

He said he asked the South Sudan Relief and Rehabilitation Commission in Juba to offer assistance to the people coming from Wau.

Fr Kual appealed to international and local humanitarian organizations to intervene urgently and rescue the situation before it gets worse.
