The Sudan Council of Churches or SCC called on religious leaders to unite and enlighten the faithful at every prayer meeting about the dangers of HIV and AIDS.
SCC HIV AIDS officer Tiberius Leca said during a one-day workshop for religious leaders on Tuesday in Juba that AIDS ABC (abstinence, being faithful and condomizing) was not enough to prevent the spread of the virus. He said the faithful needed more information and counselling about HIV and AIDS.
The official called on Christian and Muslim leaders to give at least five to ten minutes to disseminate information about the killer disease during prayers.
Director of HIV AIDS in Central Equatoria Health Ministry Felix Wani Lokule called on the participants to take the discussions seriously and make recommendations that can be implemented to block the spread of the virus.
He urged the participants to tell their denominations and communities that HIV AIDS cannot be treated, but can be prevented.
Dr Lokule said prevention can be done if people are serious and empowered to change sex habits.
The workshop, funded by Christian Aid, brought together over 50 Christian and Muslim leaders.
