Over 500 people have applied for a plot at Torit Model Market and the screening of applicants started on Tuesday.
At 10:00 AM, the applicants were already crowding the door, struggling to access the office to get application forms for the screening, Radio Emmanuel reported.By 3:00 PM the screening process was continuing as the number of applicants kept increasing.
Radio Emmanuel could not access the officials for details of the process but a source disclosed that each applicant was required to turn up personally with identification to avoid individuals applying for multiple plots.
Torit Model Market, built in 2011, is equipped with fences, separate blocks for vegetables, meat and fish, storage for goods, an elevated water tank, a borehole and separate blocks for washing facilities and toilets.
The project, providing farmers with a space to trade their products, was implemented by the Norwegian Church Aid (NCA) through the UN Development Programme in collaboration with the state Ministry of Physical Infrastructure.
