CIVIL SOCIETY LAUNCHES JOINT PROJECT ON BILL OF RIGHTS REVIEW

Community Empowerment for Progress Organisation or CEPO on Tuesday launched a joint project to lobby for a comprehensive Bill of Rights in the permanent Constitution in collaboration with the national Human Rights Commission.

CEPO national coordinator Edmond Yakani said the overall goal of the project was to study of the Bill of Rights in the Transitional Constitution and to create a common ground for public participation in its review.

Deputy Chairperson for Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs Committee in the National Legislative Assembly, Gabriel Guot Guot, lamented the citizens did not know about their constitutional rights because the Transitional Constitution was not made public.

He added that the lack of information about one’s constitutional rights constituted a problem.

The joint project to lobby for a comprehensive Bill of Rights in the permanent Constitution is funded by the European Union that contributed with 70,000 Euro.

The project takes one year.
