The dismissal of Lakes State Governor revealed the backwardness of the Transitional Constitution that grants the President the power to fire elected officials.
This is the view expressed by the Sudd Institute that called for an open and participatory debate and reconsideration during the current constitutional review process about presidential powers.The Institute writes in its latest weekly review that the power the President has to sack elected governors is against the decentralization system of governance enshrined in the Transitional Constitution.
It adds that the constitutional clause also hinders democracy, diminishing the legitimacy of voters and setting a very poor precedence that undermines the authority of state assemblies.
The Sudd Institute says the article that allows the president to sack elected governors and MPs needs to be studied and subjected to wider consultations and debate, in order to possibly transfer some of the presidential powers to the state assemblies.
