South Sudan on Wednesday joint the rest of the world in commemorating the Geographical Information System (GIS) under the theme √É’GIS for decision-making and strategic planning for sustainable development’.
The celebration was organized by the National Bureau of Statistics in partnership with UNDP.Deputy Chair of the Bureau, John Maciek Acuoth said the celebration was chosen by the practitioners in 1999 to acknowledge the important of GIS technology.
He said GIS is basically used for collecting all sort of information needed by any institution for its proper planning.
Mr Maciek added that South Sudan started using the GIS technology in 2006.
UNDP Crisis and Recovery Mapping and Analysis Project Coordinator, Judith Omondi said the idea was to standardise the method of collecting information to enable the entire institutions share data.
Mrs Omondi added that UNDP is technically supporting National Bureau of Statistic in the production of the data.
Mrs Omondi said the strategy of supporting and building capacities of the Bureau is aimed at enabling the Bureau to help other government institutions.
