The Auditor General has said that the Chamber needs to strengthen its independence from other arms of Government in order to fully discharge its constitutional duties.

Stephen Wondu told the attendance at a graduation ceremony of auditors in Juba that President Salva Kiir Mayardit and the National Legislature agreed to strengthen the Audit Chamber laws.

He said the process may take few months to implement.

Mr Wondu explained that both the National Legislature and the public were happy with the Audit Chamber reports.

He said he will appear before the House on Friday before the report is submitted to the plenary for discussion.

The Auditor General has been compiling reports of Government performance since 2005 when the Government of Southern Sudan or GoSS was founded.

So far the Chamber has audited the GoSS accounts between 2005 and 2008, producing alarming sums of money that disappeared into private pockets.
