World Food Programme is running a food airdropping operation in Yida refugee’s camp in Unity State since September 10 until the end of the month.

WFP spokesman George Fominyen told CRN on Thursday that the planes are dropping mainly cereals.

He explained that the food prepositioned in Yida before the rains was not enough for the unforeseen wave of refugees from Nuba Mountains.

Mr Fominyen said Yida is cut off from the rest of the country for more than six months during the rainy season.

He added that trucks cannot access the refugee camps until the roads dry up in December.

Mr Fominyen said the 30,000 tons of food being dropped by planes are enough to feed 60,000 refugees during three months.

The bags of food dropped by the aircraft are collected by WFP staff in Yida and stored for distribution to individuals or families.
