A retired Catholic Bishop said Thursday that senior officers are using prisoners as house servants. He added that death penalty does not benefit the nation.

Bishop Paride Taban told CRN that prisoners should be used to produce food and other goods for the country instead of staying idle in jail.

He said prisoners are being used by senior officers as baby sitters and house workers and their children became lazy because they do not do have any work to do.

Bishop Taban argued that inmates are not criminals but people under transformation: criminals are those still at large.

Speaking about death penalty, the prelate said it was more productive for the state to keep a person alive and transform them into good citizens.

Bishop Taban questioned the benefits of death penalty.

He said convicts can be transformed and during their prison terms they can benefit the nation while an executed person is just buried.
