The South Sudan Red Cross is planning to hold its first general assembly in Juba as it prepares to become a full member of the International Committee of the Red Cross and Red Crescent.

In a press release obtained by Bakhita Radio, the Secretary General of South Sudan Red Cross, Arthur Poole, said the general assembly will bring representatives from the ten States to elect a new governing body that includes board members and the president.

He said the board members will be tasked with the work of driving the new organisation forward as it seeks to help more South Sudanese communities affected by natural disasters and violence.

Mr Poole added that the General Assembly is an important step in recognising the commitment of the humanitarian principles like neutrality and impartiality.

He said the new governing body elected during the General Assembly will play a central role in determining the future strategy and policies of the organisation.

Mr Poole added that South Sudan Red Cross will assist communities in need.

South Sudan Red Cross was established on July 9, 2011, following the independence of South Sudan. It works as an independent organisation with a key role in humanitarian assistance.
