A malaria outbreak in Nuba Mountains is out of control leaving a local hospital filled beyond capacity with women and children admitted in corridors.

Rocio Aguinyaga is the nurse in charge of Female and Children Wards. She said during September malaria cases kept increasing and both wards were operating over capacity.

Nurse Aguinyaga said more than one 100 children and over 40 women were admitted.

She explained that both pregnant women and those who had just delivered were very vulnerable to malaria.

Nurse Aguinyaga said malaria increased in Nuba Mountains because many people suffer from malnutrition due to the war that started in June of 2011, paralysing agriculture e keeping critical humanitarian assistance away from the region.
