The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Wednesday facilitated the repatriation of 19 South Sudanese prisoners of war released by Sudan.

The head of ICRC in Sudan, Jean-Christophe Sandoz, said the Red Cross helped the prisoners of war to return home after obtaining their consent.

He added the prisoners of war were transported aboard an ICRC aircraft from Sudan to South Sudan, where they were placed under the care of the authorities.

Mr Sandoz said the Red Cross visited the prisoners of war in August to check on their condition and to ensure that they were treated with dignity and humanity, in accordance with international humanitarian law.

In April, the Red Cross assisted in the repatriation of 13 Sudanese prisoners of war after they were released by the South Sudanese authorities.
