Lakes State Information Minister confirmed that two people were shot dead in Rumbek North County last Thursday in a suspected revenge attack.

Charles Badiri Mayan told Good News Radio on Tuesday that the two were killed by an unknown person in Mayen Payam.

He said vengeful actions cannot be used to solve problems.

Mr Badiri urged people to present their grievances to traditional chiefs and judges instead of taking the law into their hands.

Rumbek North County Commissioner Stephen Mathiang Deng said representatives from Rumbek North, Cueibet and Rumbek Central Counties met two months ago and agreed to live peacefully.

He added that the three Counties agreed to recover stolen animals and established a point in each County where stolen cows would be assembled for identification.

The commissioner said 63 people went from Cueibet to Mayen together with some organized forces to identify stolen cattle.

Heavy rains delayed the process and the people had to sleep in Mayen protected by soldiers.

Mr Mathiang said two people were killed by a single shot during the night by unknown attackers: one died instantly and the other passed away five hours later.

On Sunday, a delegation of top Government officials led by the Acting Lakes State’s Governor visited Mayen in Rumbek North County to assess the situation.

Investigations into the incident started and six people were already arrested in connection with the double killing.
