A government official said the three media bills that have reached the national parliament for approval are not perfect but can be improved if journalists lobby MPs.
Information and Broadcasting Deputy Minister Atem Yak Atek told a consultative meeting on media bills that they took too long to be ready and some ministers think that they are not perfect. He advised the journalists to talk to MPs to improve the bills, discussed and passed them quickly when they resume their sittings in November.
Mr Atem urged journalists to be cautious while reporting and double check their facts and figures before publishing the stories.
He said the Government wants a democratic society and tolerance of divergence views and does not back misunderstandings between security and the media personnel.
Mr Yak was talking at the consultative meeting on the media bills organized by the Association of Media Development in South Sudan in collaboration with Article 19 in Juba on Monday.
The conference drew about 100 top media officials from the national and state governments and journalists from various media houses.
