The Central Bank Governor has denied rumours that the institution was planning to produce coins.

Cornelio Koryom Mayik was reacting to an article published by Sudan Tribune on September 7, saying the Bank was planning to produce coins with Dr John Garang’s smiling face.

He said the Central Bank does not intend to introduce coins.

Mr Koryom added that the person quoted by Sudan Tribune was not authorized to talk about currency issues in the Central Bank.

He explained that only the Governor has authority to issue press statements.

Mr Koryom said coins were produced in the form of piaster in 2011 and are kept in the stores of the Bank.

He said the piaster coins were rejected by the market because they did not meet technical requirements.

The Governor refuted allegations that salaries were delayed because the Bank ran short of South Sudanese Pounds.

He said the bank has enough local currency to pay salaries for five years.
