South Sudan has applied to join the Great Lakes Conference after the President of the Republic participated in last week’s summit as an observer.
Minister at the Office of the President, Emmanuel Lowilla, told the press Tuesday afternoon at Juba International Airport that South Sudan has formally applied to join International Conference of the Great Lakes Region, Bakhita Radio reported.He said South Sudan membership would be discussed by member states in the next summit.
Mr Lowilla explained that the leaders of Great Lakes Region discussed the situation in Eastern DR Congo.
They also decided to create neutral force to monitor conflicts among member states.
The minister said the African Union was asked to provide a mandate for the neutral force to begin its work.
The International Conference of the Great Lakes Region includes Angola, Burundi, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania and Zambia.
