The Commissioner of Cueibet County in Lakes State has urged intellectuals to desist from spreading false rumours because the practice is creating fear and anxiety among the inhabitants of Cueibet.

Isaac Mayom Malek told Good News Radio on Saturday that the spreading of false rumours has scared off members of one payam from returning to Cueibet town, especially pupils attending school in the county headquarters.

He charged intellectuals spreading rumours that their behaviour is causing serious security concerns and that they would rather use the education they have received to build peace and not conflict.

Commissioner Mayom said he was not happy with the drastic decrease in the population of Cueibet, adding that there are malicious people who want to fuel further conflicts in his county.

He appealed to those involved in rumour-mongering to get back to their jobs, especially teachers, who have chosen idleness and gossiping.

Commissioner Mayom warned that the local government will not tolerate those involved in such security threats, advocating for community policing.

An inter-clan conflict involving Pagor Payam and Malon Pech Payam in Cueibet County last month left 22 dead.

Commissioner Mayom said 21 culprits have been arrested and further investigations are ongoing.
