The Catholic Bishop of Torit said Martyrs Day was a very special day in the history of South Sudan and it should be remembered with gratitude to God for the freedom and peace prevailing in the country.
Bishop Johnson Akio Mutek told Emmanuel Radio that when Dr John Garang went missing on July 30, 2005, the confusion was very big and people were worried.Bishop Akio recalled that Bishop Paride Taban and a number of priests from the diocese of Torit were involved in the search for Dr Garang after the helicopter he was flying with crashed in Eastern Equatoria.
He praised God for the SPLA’s peaceful control of such explosive situation.
Bishop Akio called for the remembrance of Anyanya war victims who equally sacrificed their blood for the freedom that prevails today in the country.
In Eastern Equatoria, Martyrs Day was postponed to August 18 to be celebrated together with Torit Uprising Day, when the first bullet for South Sudan liberation struggle was shot in 1955 n the region.
