A Catholic priest has urged parents not to charge high bride prices for their girls in order for them to have their matrimony blessed in the church.

Emmanuel Lodongo Sebit said families should not sell their girls into marriage, Radio Easter reported.

He commented that many young people avoid marrying in the church due to high bride price charged by relatives.

Fr Lodongo explained that marriage is not about how much money can be made by the bride’s family.

He added that if couples love each other they should be allowed to get married.

Fr Lodongo appealed to commissioners to talk to the chiefs and those at state level to talk to parents to stop asking high bride prices.

Fr Lodongo was speaking on Saturday at a wedding ceremony in Yei.
