Trocaire Ireland Humanitarian Protection Officer has said that is it necessary for South Sudan as a new nation to consider signing the Child Rights Convention.
Helen Nic An Ri, said that after signing the Convention on the Rights of the Child, governments should ensure that all their domestic policies are inline with the provisions of the internationally accepted treaty, Radio Good News reported.She was talking during a partnership sensitization workshop on general protection of vulnerable groups in community in the Catholic Diocese of Rumbek on Tuesday.
The workshop was to share knowledge and establish other needs to improve the lives of vulnerable groups in the Diocese.
Ms An Ri, said that the first priority of the Partnership between Trocaire and Caritas-Diocese of Rumbek would be exploring how existing legal framework can be used to safeguard the rights of children.
She noted many challenges in protecting rights of vulnerable groups such as the street children.
South Sudan Trocaire Humanitarian Project officer, Wangari Wanjau said that general protection and emergency are key areas to ensure protecting people’s rights and responsibilities.
Ms Wanjau called on the participants, ted to sensitize members of their respective parishes after the workshop.
He revealing that in the next six months follow-up activities and seminars will be organized for specific target groups in the Diocese.
The Diocesan Caritas Director, Fr. John Waweru said that Caritas will continue to play the advocacy role to ensure that all in the community leaders and other officials play their parts in protecting vulnerable groups in the Community.
The Sensitization workshop was organized by Caritas-Diocese of Rumbek supported by Trocaire Ireland.
