Juba residents expressed hope for African Unity as the continent commemorates its annual day.

Africa Day is celebrated every year on May 25 to honour the founding of the Organization of African Unity in 1963 where leaders of the 30 out of the 32 independent states signed the Charter in Addis Ababa.

Artist and calligrapher Angelo Valantino told CRN that today’s celebration reminds him of Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie who called Africans to unite when the Italians attacked his country.

He said there is hope that one day Africa will become a strong and united country.

Cigarettes seller Gal Madut Atem said commemorating Africa Day was very important because Africans need to unite and leave aside political divisions among themselves.

He added that Africa suffered from bad economy and food insecurity and people need to come together to improve the economy and score progress.

Africa Day is observed as a public holiday in Ghana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
