AU AND SOUTH SUDAN AGREE TO SPEED UP NEGOTIATIONS

The Chairman of the African Union Panel, the President of South Sudan and the South Sudanese members of the Joint Political Mechanism agreed to speed up negotiations on outstanding issues between South Sudan and Sudan.

Thabo Mbeki was in Juba today to meet with Salva Kiir Mayardit and the Joint Political Mechanism members.

He told journalists he was returning to Khartoum to consult with the government of Omar al Bashir so that Juba and Khartoum comply with the decisions of the African Union and UN Security Council.

Mr Mbeki said the Panel is consulting with the two governments to agree on the date to resume talks.

He said he was confident the the two governments should agree on a date within this week.

South Sudan chief negotiator Pagan Amum said Mr Mbeki was in Juba to engaging the government of South Sudan to discuss the implementation of the AU road map and UN Security Council resolution 2046.

The UN Security Council demanded that South Sudan and Sudan resumed negotiations until last Wednesday.
