The Juba City Council launched on Saturday a new door-to- door garbage collection system after many criticisms from the President of the Republic and the public that the capital has become filthy.

Mayor Mohammed Alhaj Babala launched the campaign in the presence of the Juba County Commissioner, Stephen Wani Michael.

Speaking to Bakhita Radio, Mr Babala said most of the garbage along the roads in Juba is dumped by families and households.

He revealed that his office is going to collect garbage from door-to-door to avoid families using the streets as dumping sites.

Mr Babala warned anybody caught dumping garbage will be fined.

He said families will not pay for collection in the next two months before the first anniversary of South Sudan’s independence.

The Mayor added that households will begin to pay for garbage collection right after July 9.

Bakhita Radio witnessed officials from Juba payam fining a garbage carrier 2,500 pounds.

The Executive officer of Juba City Council Johnson Swaka Misaka also ordered the arrest of car washers around Home and Away and threatened to close that business centre if it does not comply with orders.
