The Catholic Diocese of Torit is holding a four-day workshop to empower the community through its justice and peace programme.

The workshop that kicked off on Tuesday in Torit brought together participants from the various parishes of the diocese.

Diocesan Justice and Peace Coordinator John Saverino Opi told Radio Emmanuel that the workshop will enable participants to acquire skills and knowledge that will allow the promotion of peace and development in the communities.

Fr Opi explained that the workshop identified and targeted specific groups including youths, women, teachers, police, tribal chiefs and health workers to make them aware of the importance of peace and reconciliation among people in the community.

The Diocesan Coordinator added that the workshop will devise ways in which the Peace and Justice Department can contribute to the Constitutional review process.

Fr Opi said the workshop will also promote the social teaching of the Church and the build-up of a positive relationship with the South Sudan Police Service in order to combat crime and violence in the state.
