The former US envoy to the Sudan has called on the international community to arm South Sudan in order to stop Khartoum’s war machine.

Andrew S. Natsios wrote an article on the Washington Post titled “To stop the war on South Sudan, the US should send weapons.”

He wrote that just as the US provided weapons to support Israel, it could help bring peace to the Sudans by doing the same to South Sudan.

Mr Natsios says South Sudan’s war with the North is the result of an imbalance of military power that has encouraged military adventurism.

He added that Omar al Bashir believes he can secure his future in power by bombing the South into submission instead of negotiating.

The diplomat concluded that the only way to end Sudan’s bullying and foster peace talks is to give the South the right tools: American antiaircraft weapons.

Mr Natsios believes that if the United States provides the materiel, South Sudan can end the Sudan’s bombing campaign.
