The Catholic and Episcopalian bishops of South Sudan have recommitted themselves to ecumenical work after a pause of some years.

Ê

Fifteen bishops from the Catholic and Episcopal Church of Sudan met in Yei to discuss ways to strengthen the special ties between the two churches.

John Ashworth, who advises the Catholic Bishops’ Conference, said during the war leaders from both churches in both Sudans worked closely and held regular meetings.

He added that since the peace was signed they went their own ways.

The bishops decided to recommit themselves work together in South Sudan.

Mr Ashworth said the bishops set up a committee and offered resources to strengthen the Sudan Council of Churches.

The bishops expressed great worry about the abuse of human rights and dignity in the Sudan against Southerners and Christians.

Archbishop Paolino Lukudu Loro, the leader of the Catholic Church in South Sudan, said the ecumenical meeting was very fruitful.

He added that the participants shared about their worries, about the peace in South Sudan and Sudan and wrote a letter with a strong message to the people, both governments and the international community.

The Catholic and Episcopalian bishops of Sudan were also invited but were unable to make it due to the tense relationships between the two countries.
