The Clerk of Lakes State Legislative Assembly has defended the members of parliament against accusations of laziness.

Last week, MPs were accused of passing only two laws between 2006 and 2012: the Taxation and the Land & Survey acts.

Benjamin Matiok Mangui told Good News Radio that the Interim Assembly between 2005 and 2010 enacted the Taxation Act 2007, Land Act 2007 and the Forestry Act 2009.

He clarified that the second Parliament has so far passed the Security Act, Lakes State Customary Laws Act 2011 and the Constituency Development Act 2011.

MPs have also approved other pieces of legislation which are passed annually, including the General Budget and the Appropriation Acts.

Mr Matiok explained that the post war situation is dictating how parliamentary businesses are conducted, adding that it would be untimely to impose minimum qualifications for women and men aspiring to join the Parliament.

He urged for patience during the transitional period, considering that most constituencies have no resident graduates.

Mr Matiok said that not all MPs know enough English and they have to express themselves in Dinka and Arabic although the Constitution bars the use of the latter.

The Clerk noted that freedom of expression allows MPs to use Arabic and have their speeches translated into English.

He added that it would be illegal to record the documents in Arabic.

Lakes State Legislative Assembly is currently on recess.
