The Kampala taxi drivers started this morning a two-day strike, leaving thousands stranded on their way to work.
The taxi drivers went on strike to protest the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) decision to charge a 120,000 Ugandan Shillings monthly operation, around 180 South Sudanese Pounds. The drivers are willing to only pay 70,000 shillings, CRN correspondent reported.
The drivers also opposed the KCCA Executive Director Jennier Musisi’s decision of appointing members from the suspended Uganda Taxi Operators Drivers Association to enforce the collection of the new charges.
They accused the appointed people of corruption.
Pioneer buses, which are privately owned, are the only means of public transport helping people reach their workplaces.
The buses are yet to be officially launched since the Parliament is still to give a green light.
They were recently imported into Uganda to help reduce the monopoly of the taxis which are very expensive and cause huge traffic holdups.
