Residents of Greater Pibor are ready to hand in illegal weapons as soon as the comprehensive disarmament exercise kicks off in Jonglei State.

This was the message Pibor County Commissioner Joshua Konyi shared with CRN this morning through a phone call.

Mr Konyi said the army is in Pibor, and the situation is calm.

He added that the disarmament starts when the President of the Republic orders.

SPLA spokesperson Colonel Phillip Aguer Panyang told CRN that the disarmament exercise in Jonglei State should start within two weeks.

He said 10,000 soldiers and police officers were already deployed to Jonglei to disarm civilians with illegal guns.

Colonel Aguer added that he expected the civilians to collaborate with the organized forces during the disarmament exercise.

Jonglei is the most violent region in South Sudan and thousands have been killed in inter-tribal clashes during the last six years.
