The speaker and the president of Uganda have accepted the explanations given by lawmakers from the National Legislative Assembly contesting claims that the authorities were targeting Ugandan nationals living in South Sudan.

MP Charles Majak Deng told yesterday the National Legislative Assembly that the Ugandan speaker accused South Sudan of targeting Ugandan citizens living in the country.

Mr Majak said the South Sudanese parliament sent a delegation of MPs to Uganda to celebrate the country’s 49 years of independence.

He said the delegation took the opportunity to meet with the Ugandan speaker and explain that no Ugandan is harassed by South Sudanese authorities except in few unfortunate cases that happen also to nationals.

He said the meeting lasted for one hour and the Ugandan speaker accepted the explanations provided by South Sudanese MPs.

Mr Majak said the delegation took a special concern over the alleged accusation that South Sudan was mistreating Ugandans without legal justification.

He added that the accusation reached the president of Uganda and the delegation met with Yoweri Museveni to defuse the claims.

Mr. Majak said Mr Museveni accepted the explanations provided by the MPs together with an apology sent by President Salva Kiir Mayardit.

Speaker James Wani Igga headed the three-member delegation of the National Assembly to Uganda’s national celebration.
