The UN Secretary General warned yesterday that the current oil row between South Sudan and Sudan could degenerate into a serious humanitarian crisis and asked the international community to intervene.
Ban Ki-moon said in a press conference yesterday in Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia, that it was up to the presidents Salva Kiir Mayardit and Omar al Bashir to demonstrate the necessary political will to resolve their differences through dialogue. The UN chief added that the oil row between Juba and Khartoum reached a critical point and it was a major threat to peace and security across the region.
He urged the international community to act now because as long as the issues remain unresolved, tensions will only grow.
Mr Ban accused Mr Kiir and Mr al-Bashir of lack of political will and urged the president of Sudan again to fully cooperate with the United Nations.
