A group of armed men who kidnapped two catholic priests in Sudan on Sunday are demanding a ransom in order to set them free.

The two priests, Joseph Makwey, 45, and Sylvester Mogga, 35, were abducted on Sunday night, January 15, from the parish of Saint Josephine Bakhita, in Rabak, a town 60 kilometres south of Khartoum.

A source from the Archdiocese of Khartoum told CRN News via e-mail that the two priests are being held at Kweik and seem to be well.

Auxiliary Bishop Daniel Adwok Kur of Khartoum is negotiating with the kidnappers believed to belong to the Shilluk community.

Bishop Daniel said in a note to the Church personnel that the matter is delicate and he is in permanent contact with Cardinal Gabriel Zubeir Wako and with Archbishop Leo Boccardi, the Pope’s representative to Sudan and South Sudan.

The Bishop asked the faithful to keep Fr Makwey and Fr Mogga on their prayers.
